My new year's resolution (yeah thats right, I got one, for the first time in a very long time), early!
- Learn Spanish upto the end of the 3rd set of Pimsleur Audio CDs.
- Learn a lot about Finance - pass at least Lvl 1 of the CFA exam.
- Get at least one appreciable (as in, people will like it, damnit!) version of a neat little (as in tiny) photo sharing thing.
- Get a California license and a car (in no particular order).
- Sixpack.
- Read atleast 10 books (that'll be more books than I've read in the past ten years).
- ... profit!?

PS. This list is a work in progress.

According to the above story, Americans are no longer the biggest (per capita) polluters on the planet. The Australians now have the coveted top spot.

This is an outrage. We can't be number 2! Time to turn on those engines..

I find it kinda amusing that when I look for a 'temple' or 'mandir' near my house on Google Maps, all I get is synagogues - which, isn't a problem - but I don't think they celebrate Diwali :(.

The Mafia's "Ten Commandments" (source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/708...)
No-one can present himself directly to another of our friends. There must be a third person to do it.

Never look at the wives of friends.

Never be seen with cops.

Don't go to pubs and clubs.

Always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty - even if your wife's about to give birth.

Appointments must absolutely be respected.

Wives must be treated with respect.

When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth.

Money cannot be appropriated if it belongs to others or to other families.

People who can't be part of Cosa Nostra: anyone who has a close relative in the police, anyone with a two-timing relative in the family, anyone who behaves badly and doesn't hold to moral values.

Here's an idea for restructuring a software company that may be traditionally lead by the marketing department.
First what do I mean by 'lead by the marketing department'? This isn't some rant about how much I hate marketing departments or how I feel that they don't know what they're doing. So what am I trying to say? A company that is lead by the marketing department is usually one where the people in marketing are the ones that research what customers wand and need, and then define the products that the company will develop and sell. I think this represents most companies that have a marketing department (though I could be very wrong so don't shoot me).

When a company's marketing and sales department(s) do product definition, promise features to current and perspective features that will be 'in the next release', this puts considerable pressure on the whole organization to perform. The marketing department - the head of which is pretty high up in the organization is under pressure because he/she has promised features to someone that have to go out the door or the company may lose face. The project managers are under pressure because there are already important features that have been scheduled and they may have to be taken out. And finally the developers are working under a tight deadline - which affects the quality of the product and puts mental pressures because it may feel as if everything is riding on their shoulders.

One Solution:
Don't promise anything that isn't developed. Simply try to market / sell what has already been developed. Okay - so this is a bit unfair to the marketing folks, right? Not so. Here's how: Let the marketing department define whats needed in 2 quarters, while the developers work on next quarter's code. When that roll happens, let the marketing folks promise it for the quarter AFTER the roll. So this way marketing always knows what they can promise, while they are always planning on what they can promise in two quarters time. This will also allow them to get the appropriate campaigns planned. It will allow the developers to develop stuff, and the company won't lose face since they are always only promising whats already been developed.

The big overhead in all this is the initial 2 quarter waiting period that marketing has to wait. Once the company gets the ball rolling though, it should translate into business as usual.

Most ridiculous British laws:

1. It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament (27 percent)

2. It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside-down (seven percent)

3. In Liverpool, it is illegal for a woman to be topless except as a clerk in a tropical fish store (six percent)

4. Mince pies cannot be eaten on Christmas Day (five percent)

5. In Scotland, if someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your toilet, you must let them enter (four percent)

6. A pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants, including in a policeman's helmet (four percent)

7. The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the king, and the tail of the queen (3.5 percent)

8. It is illegal to avoid telling the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing (three percent)

9. It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament in a suit of armour (three percent)

10. In the city of York it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow (two percent)

I went to a Halloween party!! :D.
I was a monk. Then an electric monk. Then the monk god father (electric monk with gun). There was lots of paint that glowed in the dark, some crazy vodka based drink and lots of food!. OH And there was a competition of who had the best costume too. I did not win.

I met the notorious Betty Page, Marry Poppins, Little Red Riding Hood, Evil Little Red Riding Hood, two school girls and Wilma Flinstone all in the same evening. Solid.

Saturday October 20th: Today started out wonderfully. It had been raining on and off for two days but this morning, it was bright! So I proceeded to do what I do best on a Saturday morning - I went back to sleep for another hour or so. But I couldn't sleep. I had studying to do! w00t. Woke up.  Cleaned up. Had breakfast (ice cream). Then I sat down to study.

It only took me two hours of wasting my time and thumb twiddling to realize that this wasn't working out. I had to go somewhere else to study. Its not like my apartment isn't quiet enough - I think it was the sunlight shining on my monitor. So for the first time so far, I went to work on a Saturday.

I got to work at 1:30 - only realizing that I had to turn off the security alarm. OMG - I've never done that before. What if I get it wrong? What if it keep on beeping and then the siren goes off? So today was the first time that I've either unlocked the office or locked it - and I did em' both in one day. Awesome :).

I sat at work for four hours and got about half an hour's worth of studying done. But I was so psyched to be there.. it really felt like I was getting studying done! Yeah so right after I'm done writing this message (its 10pm now and I'm home, back from work.. got back at 6pm) - I'm gonna catch up on my studying.

I'm going to hate my life until December 2nd. I better pass that fucking exam.

Oh yeah - forgot - today was 'lights out' in SF - one hour of darkness - kinda lame in comparison to the great East Coast blackout - well at least the ice cream will stay frozen. And I missed the last day of Navratri .. guess I'll have to wait until next year .. waw waw.
